Film Synopsis:

A hiphop urban fairy-tale in mixed media about an aspiring graffiti artist named DJ who arrives in a “garbage island” of the big city. At first joining the local gang, DJ quickly falls afoul of the gang leader Tikboy even as he falls in love with the island’s prettiest girl Josie. The conflict that ensues between his artists, rappers and dancers and the drug-dealing gang results in a human cockfight or pintakasi.

“We can paint our tomorrow!” the islanders declare, inspired by DJ, the magical boy’s dream. But in a slum where everyone owes the gang lord a debt of gratitude” more costly than mere money, DJ must first liberate Josie from the debt she owes Tikboy. He must fight off the amiable granny (Lola) who turns out to be the syndicate boss. He has to convince his kind but corrupt uncle, the “dancing policeman,” that he need not be devoured by the rotting system. Finally he has to prove to the jaded villagers, including his beloved Josie, that there is an honest way to eke a living in this island of misery.

In a final showdown with Tikboy, DJ proves that art conquers all.

Fool In A Bubble (a friends independent film lets support him ^_^)
An award-winning feature documentary film screened at CineManila 2012. By Joshua Sternlicht

Fool In A Bubble explores the journeys and conflicts of South African musician, poet and cult legend Syd Kitchen. Syd questions art, audiences and the meaning of success. The film weaves Syd’s past, present and foreseeable future featuring a self-destructive downfall, near death accident, friend’s intervention, self-resurrection, changes, challenges and the recording & launch of a landmark album in New York with South African musicians from Paul Simon’s Graceland album. Ultimately this is a film about hope and transformation through music, poetry and power of the human spirit. Syd is remarkably candid, revealing a fragility and self-awareness that makes for compelling viewing.

Joshua Sternlicht is an independent filmmaker based in Brooklyn, New York. He has created award-winning films and started Eyespot Films - www.eyespotfilms.com. Joshua also teaches filmmaking and visual media.

Indonesia: 3 DOA 3 CINTA (12:30PM)
Running time: 114 minutes)
Pesantren: 3 Wishes 3 Loves (Love, Actually)

Three teenage boys face the challenges of growing up in this coming of age drama. Huda (Nicholas Saputra), Rian (Yoga Pratama) and Syahid (Yoga Bagus Satatagama) are three close friends who attend the same pesentren (religious boarding school) in Indonesia. While the school's principal Kyai Wahib (Brohisman) is a progressive Muslim who believes that his people should live in peace with Jews and Christians, Syahid harbors bitter feelings against Christians after real estate agents from the West cheated his father in a land deal, and he's increasingly sympathetic to the extreme Islamic views of one of his teachers, Ustadz (Doubleh Zulkanean). Meanwhile, Rian has lost his father and is considering following his example by opening a video store; he finds a mentor in Toha (Butet Kartaredjasa), who runs a traveling movie theater that's set up camp near the school. And Huda, who is trying to track down his mother who vanished near Jakarta, has fallen for Dona Satelit (Dian Sastrowardoyo), the pretty lead singer with a struggling rock band making a tour stop nearby. Huda wonders if Dona is taking advantage of him when she asks him to lend her some money, but he soon finds her story is more complicated than he imagined. 3 Doa 3 Cinta (aka Pesentren) was the first feature film from writer and director Nurman Hakim.

Vietnam: The Guava House (3PM)
Running time: 100 minutes
Drama
Nhat Minh Dang gives us a look at the complex society that is modern Vietnam. We see a Buddhist society with a Communist government that is beginning to embrace western values -- at least commercial values. All these competing factors have their positive and negative sides, which the writer/director presents with openness and honesty, and through the eyes of a mentally underdeveloped young man working as an artist model. The story centers around his boyhood home and the quava tree which grew outside. The house and the tree both symbolize the history of Vietnam in the 20th century.

For most of us, this is a glimpse of a world most of us do not know -- not to mention a well made film.

Gilles and Christine are attractive, sexually active teenagers from unstable homes. When they do some shop-lifting together she is arrested, but he gets away. She escapes from a mental institution and meets him at an abandoned house in the country, where a large group of rebellious teenagers are having a wild, all-night party. American rock music from the period is played prominently and has a very strong effect, especially "Me and Bobby McGee," sung by Janis Joplin. Drugs are used, mainly pot and hash. As the party is winding down, Gilles and Christine escape even deeper into the countryside, searching for a commune where artists are said to live without electricity or running water. This is Christine's idea, but Gilles reluctantly goes along. A jolting conclusion shows us that, as Assayas puts it, "Gilles' real life has now begun."

***8 Demonlover (2002)

Demonlover is a 2002 technological neo-noir thriller film by French writer/director Olivier Assayas. The film stars Connie Nielsen,Charles BerlingChloë Sevigny, and Gina Gershon with a musical score by Sonic Youth. It premiered at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival,[2] although it was more widely released several months later.
The story focuses on the entanglement between various national corporations vying over the financial control of interactive 3-D animepornography. The film contains various themes, including desensitization to violence and the problematic nature of globalization. The film defies most genre categories, but is most often labeled a drama with hints of espionage and corporate crime reminiscent in noirthrillers. Upon its theatrical release in the United States, it was rated R for strong violence, sexual content and some language. It was released in both R-rated and unrated director's cut versions on DVD.

The film is primarily in the French language with some scenes in English and some in Japanese. It has been considered an example of New French Extremity by some journalists. In recent years the film has gained a cult following for its post-modern aesthetics and soundtrack by American rock group, Sonic Youth.

A play writer entertains the actors of his next play, including his ex-wife and her new lover. Everyone is finding his new place.

Part of what lent credibility to the helmer's previous pics was their setting among semi-realistic adolescent characters. Here, we're stuck with a tortured writer, August (Pascal Greggory), whose pontificating about his own brilliance is no worse than the masochistic frolicking of ex-wife Harriet (Julie Depardieu) and her latest beau (Louis Garrel). Throw in a waiflike secretary (Agathe Bonitzer) who readily sheds her clothes, and you're left with a tedious passion play that's as classy as August shouting "Show me your ass!" before he gives Harriet a light smacking. Overlit lensing by Caroline Champetier is not her best. source:http://www.variety.com/review/VE1117942735/

A MUST SEE :D

Two brothers and a sister witness the disappearance of their childhood memories when they must relinquish the family belongings to ensure their deceased mother's succession.

Three siblings must come to terms with their mother's mortality as they decide what to do with her valuable belongings in this warm family drama from filmmaker Olivier Assayas. Hélène Berthier (Edith Scob) is about to turn 75, and her children are gathering at her home in the country for a party. Adrienne (Juliette Binoche) has flown in from New York City, where she lives with her boyfriend, James (Kyle Eastwood). Jérémie (Jérémie Renier) has taken a rare break from his globe-trotting business interests to stop by with his wife (Valérie Bonneton). And Frédéric (Charles Berling), the only one who lives close enough to visit regularly, has also come with his spouse, Lisa (Dominique Reymond). Hélène has inherited a large and valuable collection of art from her brother, and with her health beginning to fail, she approaches Frédéric and asks that he, Jérémie, and Adrienne come up with a plan to deal with the pieces after her death. Frédéric wants to keep the collection together and see if they can persuade a gallery to purchase and present them as a set. Jérémie and Adrienne have other ideas, but as he's pondering a business opportunity in China and she's planning on settling in America for good, they don't have as much influence over the final decision as Frédéric. L'Heure d'Été (aka Summer Hours) was produced in part by the celebrated French art gallery Musée d'Orsay, and was one of a handful of films created to honor the museum in its 20th anniversary year. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
