The Elric brothers' mother is dead (due to a plague) and their father has long since abandoned them. Deciding to perform a forbidden human transmutation (Edward was 10- yrs old) to bring their mother back, they end up losing their bodies. (plot summary/spoiler alert) Edward lost his left leg while Al (Alphonse) lost his whole body. Edward attempted to get the soul of his brother and attach it to an Armor then he lost his right right arm.
Ed became the youngest State Alchemist in history by achieving his certification at age twelve. Three years later, Ed has become fully engrossed in his search for the legendary Philosopher's Stone, an item with which he hopes to restore his younger brother Alphonse - whose whole body had been lost in the aftermath of that tragic experiment.
